Mongolia 2001 2500 tugrik
This specimen was lot 33492 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "MONGOLIA. 2500 Togrog, 2001. Lunar Series, Year of the Snake. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. A SCARCE and dazzling lunar issue, this specimen resides at the precipice of perfection." The various spellings of the Mongolian currency can cause confusion. Wikipedia comments, "The tögrög or tugrik (Mongolian Cyrillic: төгрөг, Mongolian script: ᠲᠥᠭᠦᠷᠢᠭ, transcription: tögürig; sign: ₮; code: MNT) is the official currency of Mongolia. It was historically subdivided into 100 möngö (мөнгө / ᠮᠥᠩᠭᠦ)." This appears to be a series, as coinage for the year of the dragon was struck in 2000. Other denominations were made in silver.
Recorded mintage: 2,000.
Specification: 7.76 g, 0.999 fine gold, 22.5 mm diameter, 0.250 oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Fr-unlisted, KM-240.
