Monaco 1735 8 deniers
This specimen was lot 1926 in Jean Elsen sale 152 (Brussels, September 2022), where it sold for €60 (about US$73 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MONACO, Honoré III (1733-1795), Cu dardenna, 1735. D/ Grand H couronné. R/ Sainte Dévote deb., accostée de la date. Essai de perforation. Beau. (principality of Monaco, Honorius III, 1733-95, copper dardenne of 1735. Obverse: large crowned "H"; reverse: St. Dévotius standing, dividing the date. Attempted perforation, Fine.)"
The coinage of Monaco in the eighteenth century is scanty, mostly imitations of French or Sardinian coinage. The result was a mix of French and Italian denominations. Three deniers = one liard; 4 liards = one sol; 3 sols = one pezetta; 20 pezettas = one scudo. This is a scarce one year type. The SCWC lists two varieties: KM 87.1 ("crowned H among 3 diamonds") and KM 87.2 ("standing saint without halo divides date"), which seem to us descriptions of the obverse and reverse. A liard and a three sols were also struck in 1735.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper, this specimen 3,56 g.
