Monaco 1720 3 sols KM-80
This specimen was lot 1089 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €550 (about US$762 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MONACO, Antoine Ier (1701-1731), billon pezzetta, 1720. D/ ANT I D G PRIN MONOECI B. cuir. à d. R/ AVXIL MEVM A DOM Écu couronné. Rare. (principality of Monaco, Anthony I, 1701-31, billon pezzetta of 1720. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms. Rare, Fine/Fine - Very Fine.)"
The coinage of Monaco in the eighteenth century is scanty, mostly imitations of French or Sardinian coinage. The result was a mix of French and Italian denominations. Three deniers = one liard; 4 liards = one sol; 3 sols = one pezetta (shown here); 20 pezettas = one scudo. The SCWC catalogs this as a three sols while Numista says it is a six sols. It was struck 1720 only and is very scarce. Varieties exist along with KM 81, which has a different reverse.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.8-4.6 g, billon, this specimen 4,47 g.
