Nomisma Aste sale 3, lot 1963

This specimen was lot 1963 in Nomisma Aste srl, Auction 3 (Verona, Italy, May 2023), where it did not sell. The lot description noted,

"MIRANDOLA Alessandro I Pico (1602-1637) 56 Bolognini 1618 - AG RRRR Ottimo esemplare per questo tipo di moneta estremamente rara, nota in pochissimi esemplari tutti di qualità inferiore. Ex Collezione Fassio n. 1042. BB-SPL. (duchy of Mirandola, Alexander Pico I, 1602-37, scudo of 1618. Great rendition of this extremely rare type, the few known examples were all in lower grade. Ex Fassio Collection, n. 1042. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

Alessandro was promoted to duke by the emperor in 1617 and this coin likely celebrates that event. His son, Alessandro II, issued a ducatone (Dav-4020) whereupon the coinage ceased. The last duke fell foul of the emperor in 1708 and was forced to sell out to the d'Estes of Modena.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 26,82 g.

Catalog reference: MIR 528, Dav-4012.
