Jean Elsen sale 142, lot 1446
from the Stack's Bowers 2024 ANA sale, lot 42426
SB824-42426r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1446 in Jean Elsen sale 142 (Brussels, September 2019), where it sold for €350 (about US$454 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, MILAN, Philippe II d'Espagne (1554-1598), AR scudo d'argento, 1594. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Ecu couronné, dans un cartouche orné. Beau à Très Beau. (duchy of Milan, Philip II, 1554-98, silver scudo of 1594. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms in an ornate cartouche. Fine - Very Fine.)"

After the extinction of the Sforza in 1535, French and Spanish armies contested for the duchy until Charles V prevailed. This type was struck for Philip II 1592-99. The Spanish issues for Milan ended with the death of Charles II in 1700, when the duchy passed to Austria, which held it until the coming of Napoleon. The second specimen was lot 42426 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[2] noted, "ITALY. Milan. Scudo, 1594. Milan Mint. Filippo II (Philip II of Spain). NGC AU-55. Wholly original looking and very attractive, this nicely preserved example displays rich mottled gray and slate patina with a slight iridescent sheen. Boldly struck with well-formed design features, this handsome example offers much originality with good eye appeal."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver; the first specimen is 31,82 g.
