This specimen was lot 3722 in Goldberg sale 70 (Los Angeles, September 2012), where it sold for $57,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States - Milan. Doppio Testone d'oro, ND. Ludovico Maria Sforza, 1494-1500. Lovely stylized renaissance portrait right. Reverse: Ruler on horse. Very Rare multiple gold testone. NGC graded MS-63." In 1500, the French invaded Italy and captured Ludovico. Many consider this the beginning of the end of the Renaissance as the devastation of the resulting war terminated Italian prosperity.
