Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 57706
SB124-57706 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 57706 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/15 Onza, 1987-Mo. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-67." In 1981, the Mexico mint introduced the gold onza as competition for the krugerrand. The onza was initially offered in one, half and quarter ounce sizes. The silver Libertad was added in 1982. The 1/20 onza (KM 530) and 1/15 onza (shown here) were offered in 1987. The 1/20 onza has been struck intermittently since but not the 1/15 onza, rendering this issue a one year type. This example realized also six times its bullion value, so it seems collectors appreciate this unusual issue which lacks the national eagle.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.073 g, 0.900 fine gold, 0.0667 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM-628.
