This specimen was lot 72283 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Platinum Onza, 1987-Mo P. Mexican (Potosi) Mint. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Commemorating the Mexican Mint, which had moved to Potosi from Mexico City earlier in the decade, this specimen presents intense mirrored brilliance in the fields and alluring frosting imparted unto the devices. Compare to a similar example, a PCGS PROOF-68 Deep Cameo, that realized a total of $5,760 in our November 2022 CCO (Lot # 72904)." This piece lies on the border between coin and medal. It has no face value yet was struck by the Mexico mint (no longer in Mexico City). It is similar enough to other gold and silver onzas issued on other occasions for collectors who might spurn ordinary medals to include it. The platinum onza never evolved into a regular series.
