The stress of inflation in the 1980's as Mexico squandered her oil bonanza caused many coin types to come and go. This type was introduced in 1970 and lasted until 1983, when it was superseded by a stainless steel type (KM 496) which lasted until 1987. Open and closed "8" varieties exist for the year. Morelos, hero of the war of independence, appears on the obverse.
Recorded mintage: 413,349,000 "closed 8" plus 58,616,000 "open 8".
Specification: 9 g, copper-nickel, 29 mm diameter, reeded edge.
