Mexico 1981-Mo 20 centavos
The first specimen was lot 70677 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 20 Centavos, 1981/1982-Mo. Mexico City Mint. PCGS MS-64. Overdate variety. A very interesting and SCARCE error featuring an overdate of a later date, this minor presents a subtle tone and crisp overall details." This type was struck 1974-83. This overdate likely came about when it became clear that no 1982 20 centavos would be made and dies prepared in anticipation of the new year would not be usable. It is the only issue of this type that is scarce.
Recorded mintage: 248,500,000 (open 8) plus 106,205,000 (closed 8).
Specification: 3 g, copper-nickel, 20 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 442.
