This coin was minted in 1959 to commemorate the centennial of Venustiano Carranza's birth. It was meant to circulate but worn specimens are scarce, suggesting widespread hoarding. No further five pesos were issued until the copper-nickel type of 1971-78 featuring Vicente Guerrero.
Recorded mintage: 1,200,000.
