Mexico 1935-M 50 centavos
The first specimen was lot 74849 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 50 Centavos, 1935-M. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-66. This magnificent Gem 50 Centavos blushes with a light pastel tone and surfaces that have so little contact visible on them the instances can be counted upon one hand. This example is tied for the finest example ever certified by NGC." A brief bump in the price of silver in 1935 caused mint authorities to issue this fifty centavos in debased silver. Besides the date, it may be distinguished from others in the regular series (KM 447) by the absence of the "0.720" on the reverse. Strangely, the mint struck silver pesos and twenty centavo pieces in 1935 and they were not affected. The 1937 issue resumed the usual alloy.
Recorded mintage: 70,800,000.
Specification: 7.97 g, 0.420 fine silver, 27 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-448.
