Mexico 1904-Zs Z 20 centavos
This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1898-1905 at the Zacatecas mint, which closed in 1905. This twenty centavo piece replaced the twenty-five centavo piece struck 1869-92. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller twenty centavo piece in the 1905 reform that changed "Republica Mexicana" to "Estados Unidos Mexicanos." Zacatecas is probably the least common of the four mints that struck the type. Assayer “M” is also recorded for 1904 and is scarce. The first specimen was lot 9035 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $431.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Zacatecas. 20 Centavos, 1904/804-ZsZ. Rare overdate. NGC Unc Details--Surface Hairlines." The second specimen was lot 9036 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $287.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Zacatecas. 20 Centavos, 1904-ZsZ. NGC MS-65."
