This specimen was lot 12368 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1754-MF. NGC AU-55. Ferdinand VI (1746-60)." Shown is a "large bust" eight escudos, one of a type struck 1752-56 during the reign of Ferdinand VI. All eight escudos of this king are rare and expensive. The reverse motto, "NOMINA MAGNA SEQUOR," is Latin for "I follow a great name [Philip V]." This coin was legal tender in the United States, where it was known as a doubloon, and would have traded for $15.50.
