This specimen was lot 31053 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $9,987.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Philip V gold 4 Escudos 1742/32 Mo-MF AU55 NGC, Mexico City mint. A flashy and most attractive coin for the designation, with gorgeous orange color, considerably lustrous surfaces and only limited friction evidence on the higher points defining the grade. A clear and extremely rare overdate, with only two other examples noted by the cataloguer and missing from all major collections examined. Curiously, no evidence of a another digit appears underneath the final '2', possibly the consequence of an amended and previously unused die with the unfinished '173x' date to strike the present example (the use of a die dated 1732 seems unlikely since all examined examples of the - very rare - 1732 date were struck from a different die). In addition to the noted very rare overdate, the present coin is also a superior representative of the type, with less than 10 examples of any date certified higher by NGC. Thusly, a coin that should appeal to a wide audience of collectors. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." This rare type is listed for 1732-47. No regular date is recorded for 1742.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.917 fine gold, .399 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-9859, KM 135, cf. Cal-248 (unlisted as an overdate), Fr-9.
