Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 41499

This specimen was lot 41499 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Mecklenburg. Taler, 1540. Heinrich V. NGC EF Details--Obverse Graffiti." This type, struck 1540 only, is rare. Mecklenburg was united 1471-1621. Several lines ruled jointly. The final partition into Mecklenburg-Schwerin and -Strelitz occurred in 1621. Never a prosperous state, Mecklenburg issues are few and scarce.
