Stephen Album sale 50, lot 962

This specimen was lot 962 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN: Christian Ludwig I, 1658-1692, AR 2/3 thaler, 1676, initials WE, uneven but beautiful toning, XF, ex Jess Peters Auction, December 8, 1982, Lot 1445 (with tag); ex The Bleyer Collection." This windswept and sandy state on the Baltic state never struck much coinage and this type, struck 1675-78 and 1688, is typically scarce. It was struck at the peak of the fad for gulden or two-thirds thalers. Christian Ludwig converted to Catholicism in 1663, to the horror of his subjects, and never returned to his domain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver, this specimen 17.92 g.

Catalog reference: KM-A106, Dav-667.
