Massa di Lunigiana 1593 ducatone Dav-8297
This specimen was lot 98 in Numismatica Ars Classica Auction 85 (Geneva, May 2015) where it sold for 16,000 EUR (about US$21,312 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted,
"Massa di Lunigiana, Alberico I Cybo Malaspina, 1559-1623. Ducatone 1593. ALBERICVS CYBO MALASP Busto corazzato a d. Rv. PRINC S R I ET MASSAE I Stemma coronato sormontato da aquila su nastro con LIBERTAS; sotto, 15 – 93. Della più grande rarità, non più di cinque esemplari noti. Lievi screpolature del metallo, altrimenti BB. Ex listino Ratto Numismatica gennaio 1967, 300. (Massa di Lunigiana, Alberico I Cybo Malaspina, 1559-1623, ducatone of 1593. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms surmounted by eagle on ribbon with LIBERTAS; date below. Of the greatest rarity, no more than five known examples. Planchet defects, otherwise very fine.)
Questo bel ducatone, battuto a somiglianza di quelli di Roma, corrispondeva ad un valore di 10 giuli e fu detto anche piastra in quanto si avvicinava al valore della piastra fiorentina; secondo il decreto dal 28 marzo 1593 doveva essere cambiato per denari 27 e grani 14. Anche se oggi risultano pochi gli esemplari conosciuti, la zecca di Massa ne emise un numero notevole durante l'affittanza di Domenico Aurame ed anche successivamente: ebbero sempre ottimo credito. Il ritratto del principe Alberico è stato reso con notevole forza e nobiltà dall'incisore che fu probabilmente quel "maestro fiorentino" del quale parlano i documenti dell'epoca. (This beautiful ducaton, struck in the likeness of those of Rome, corresponded to a value of ten giuli and was also called a piastra as it was close to the value of the Florentine piastra; according to the decree from 28 March 1593 it had to be exchanged for 27 denarii and 14 grani. Even if today there are few known examples, the Massa mint issued a notable number during the lease of Domenico Aurame and also subsequently: they always had excellent credit. The portrait of Prince Alberico was rendered with notable strength and nobility by the engraver who was probably the "Florentine master" mentioned in documents of the time.)"
Modena lies between Parma and Ferrara, and the town of Massa lies in the south of the duchy, near Carrara. This is the only crown struck there in the sixteenth century altho the prince struck others after 1600.
