Mantua Anno 7 soldo
This specimen was lot 1135 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €100 (about US$138 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, MANTOUE, assiégée par l'armée austro-russe, AE soldo di Milano, an 7 (1799). Coulé en métal de cloche. Très Beau. (duchy of Mantua, besieged by the Austrian and Russian armies, copper soldo of Milan, year 7. Cast in bell metal, very fine.)"
Originally an independent duchy during the Renaissance, Mantua was annexed by the Austrians in 1708, on the extinction of the Gonzagas, and held by them until 1797. At the Congress of Vienna, it once again fell under Austrian rule as part of the kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. The city was besieged several times during Napoleon's Italian wars. This crude piece was issued by the French defenders along with five and ten soldi. Twenty soldi = one lira, Twelve lira = one tallero.
