Jean Elsen sale 162, lot 1261

This specimen was lot 1261 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €750 (about US$1,040 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, MANTOUE, sous domination autrichienne, assiégée par l'armée italienne, AR 20 kreuzer, 1848 GM. Rare. Légère faiblesse de frappe. (Italy, duchy of Mantua, under Austrian occupation, besieged by the Italian army, silver twenty kreuzer of 1848. Rare, slightly weakly struck, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

The aforementioned siege was unsuccessful for the Italians and the Piedmontese were forced to withdraw, causing the king to abdicate and forestalling the unification of Italy for another thirteen years.
