Künker sale 386, lot 5525

This specimen was lot 5525 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,197 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KAISERREICH ÖSTERREICH, Ferdinand I. 1835-1848. 1/2 Konv.-Taler 1848, GM, Mantua, geprägt während der Belagerung von Mantua durch italienische Truppen. RR Nur 3.947 Exemplare geprägt. Attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, min. Kratzer, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung "Cygnus in Nummis". (empire of Austria, Ferdinand I, 1835-48, half thaler of 1848, Mantua mint, struck during the siege of the city by Italian troops. Only 3,947 examples struck. Attractive example with superb patina, hairlines, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Altho the auctioneers and the SCWC list this type under Austria, it was struck by Austrian forces in Mantua, Italy, during a siege, along with a lira and a fiorino. The aforementioned siege was unsuccessful for the Italians and the Piedmontese were forced to withdraw, causing the king to abdicate and forestalling the unification of Italy for another thirteen years.
