Mansfeld 1521 thaler Dav-9471
This specimen was lot 2251 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 3,400 CHF (about US$4,035 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Mansfeld, Grafschaft, Günther IV., Ernst II., Hoyer VI., Gebhard VII. und Albrecht VII., 1486-1531 Taler 1521. Eisleben. Sehr selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, county of Mansfeld, joint rule of Gunther IV, Ernst II, Hoyer VI, Gebhard VII and Albrecht VII, 1486-1531, thaler of 1521, Eisleben mint. Very rare, Very fine-extremely fine.)"
Mansfeld and its subdivisions were counties of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. This early thaler of 1521-23 was a joint issue of all the lines. A double thaler and 1½ thaler also exist.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.95 g.
