Sincona sale 18, lot 1448

This specimen was lot 1448 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 325 (about US$428 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Taler 1604. Eisleben. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, county of Mansfeld-Vorderort-Friedeburg, thaler of 1604, Eisleben mint, good very fine.)"

This type was struck 1601-04 in Mansfeld-Friedeberg and is among the more common thalers of the period. Mansfeld-Friedeberg was a county of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. Duke Peter Ernst ruled 1532-1604; the line went extinct on his death.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.97 g.

Catalog reference: Tornau 647h, Dav-6947; KM-9.
