Mansfeld-Friedeburg 1582-BM thaler Dav-9504
This specimen was lot 73760 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Mansfeld-Friedeburg. Taler, 1582. Eisleben Mint. Peter Ernst I, Bruno II, Johann Albrecht, Johann Hoyer III, & Hoyer Christoph. NGC FINE-15. A worn but wholesome survivor, displaying readable peripheral legends and medium gray toned fields that contrast nicely with the lighter raised devices." This type was struck 1580-85 in Mansfeld-Friedeberg and is among the more common thalers of the period. Double thalers (Dav-9509) also exist. Mansfeld-Friedeberg was a county of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. Duke Peter Ernst ruled 1532-1604; the line went extinct on his death. The barely legible date, an "82", is directly above the shield.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
