Jean Elsen sale 159, lot 1145
JE159-1145r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1145 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €150 (about US$193 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, MANSFELD-EISLEBEN, Johann Georg, Peter Ernst, Johann Albrecht, Johann Hoyer et Bruno (1579), AR Taler, 1579, Eisleben. D/ Ecu sous deux heaumes et la date. R/ Saint Georges terrassant le dragon. Beau à Très Beau. (Germany, county of Mansfeld-Eisleben, John George, Peter Ernest, John Albert, John Hoyer and Bruno, joint rulers, silver thaler of 1579, Eisleben mint. Obverse: double helmeted arms and the date; reverse: St. George lances the dragon. Fine to very fine.)"

Mansfeld and its subdivisions were counties of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. This type was struck 1579 only and is a common type from this locale. Attributing these issues is made complicated by multiple joint coinages. This one has a two digit date and helmeted arms on the reverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen is 28,23 g.

Catalog reference: Tornau 409; Dav-9498, KM MB72.
