Mansfeld-Eigentliche-Hinterort 1561 thaler Dav-9535
This specimen was lot 6522 in CNG Triton XXIX (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $581.87. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY, Mansfeld-Hinterort Line (Eigentliche [County]). Volrat V, Johann I, Karl I. 1560-1566. AR Taler. Dated 1561. Coat-of-arms surmounted by ornately crested helmet / St. George on horseback right, spearing dragon to lower right. Toned. In NGC encapsulation 3501913-005, graded XF 45." Mansfeld-Eigenliche-Hinterort was a county of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. It seems the various branches of the Mansfeld line all lived in Schloss Mansfeld but occupied different parts: Vorderort (outer castle), Mittelort (middle castle) and Hinterort (inner castle). This type was struck 1561 and undated. The very similar KM MB48/Dav-9536 has the date in the reverse legend. The Hinterort line fell extinct in 1666.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver; this specimen 41 mm diameter, 6 h axis.
