Kunker sale 293, lot 1009

This specimen was lot 1009 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €260 (about US$351 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MANSFELD, MANSFELD-BORNSTEDT, GRAFSCHAFT, Karl Adam, 1655-1660. Reichstaler 1657, Eisleben. Sehr schön +. (Germany, county of Mansfeld-Bornstedt, Charles Adam, 1655-60, thaler of 1657, Eisleben mint. Very fine or better.)"

It seems the various branches of the Mansfeld line all lived in Schloss Mansfeld but occupied different parts: Vorderort (outer castle), Mittelort (middle castle) and Hinterort (inner castle). The properties were shuffled among the various lines when the counts failed to produce heirs. In 1580, the elector of Saxony seized most of the property for debt. This type is noted for 1655-60, all with mintmaster HPK. It is not expensive; its price may be depressed by the availability of the many similar Mansfeld thalers.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-6930, Tornau 271 d, KM 98.
