Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75436
SB923-75436r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75436 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "MALTA. Order of Malta. 30 Tari, 1789. Emmanuel de Rohan. PCGS MS-62. Highly desirable as an elusive Mint State Crown-sized issue from the Order of Malta, this shimmering example exhibits a full strike and appealing autumnal toning. Adjustment marks over the face are noted for the sake of completeness, though they are minor and do not detract from the overall appeal." This type was struck 1789-90 and 1795-96. It varies from the very similar Dav-1608 in the arrangement of the drapery over the grandmaster's armor. The Maltese used currency derived from their neighbors the Sicilians; 20 grani = one tari, 12 tari = one scudo.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: Dav-1609; KM-335.1.
