Künker sale 404, lot 2471

This specimen was lot 2471 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €28,000 (about US$36,739 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF FRANZ LUDWIG VON NEUBURG, 1729-1732. Ein Sechsdukatenstück für die Bistümer Breslau und Mainz. 6 Dukaten 1730, unsigniert, von P. Chr. Becker, Wien. FRANC : LUD : D . G . AR . - MOG : S . R I : PR : EL : SUP : M : Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel//O : T : EP : WOR : & • WRA : P : E : C : P : RH : B : I : C : & • M : DVX • Mit dem Kurhut bedeckter Hermelinmantel, darauf neunfeldiges Wappen von Pfalz-Neuburg, belegt mit vierfeldigem Wappen (Worms, Ellwangen/Breslau, Worms), über beiden Schilden das Kreuz des Deutschen Ordens mit dem preußischen Adler als Herzschild und dem Mainzer Rad, oben zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl 17 - 30. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Sammlung eines schwedisch-schweizerischen Unternehmers, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 373, Osnabrück 2022, Nr. 929. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Francis Louis of Neuburg, 1729-32, six ducats of 1730, unsigned, Vienna mint. Obverse: mantled bust right; reverse: mantled and capped arms of Palatinate-Neuburg quartered with the arms of Worms, Ellwangen and Breslau, over both shields the cross of the Teutonic Order with the Prussian eagle as a heart shield and the Mainz wheel, the cap divides the date. Extremely rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Franz Ludwig, a committed pluralist, was bishop of Breslau (from 1683), grand master of the Teutonic Order (from 1694), bishop of Worms (from 1694), provost of Ellwangen (from 1694), archbishop of Trier (1716-29) and archbishop of Mainz (from 1729). He gave up Trier only on the pope's direct order to take the throne of Mainz. Franz Ludwig must have preferred Breslau in Silesia because he died there in 1732, aged 67 years. This type was also struck in 1732.
