This specimen was lot 2295 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €7,500 (about US$9,841 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF WOLFGANG VON DALBERG, 1582-1601. Die Münzstätte Mainz. Dicker doppelter Goldgulden 1597, Mainz. WOLFG * D * G * AR * - * MOGVN * PR * EL * Mit Kurhut bedecktes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Dalberg), dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt//* MON * - * NOV * - * AVRE * - * MOG * Der Wappenschild von Mainz, umgeben von drei Wappenschilden (Trier, Köln, Bayern) und der, von vier Dreiblättern umgebenen, gekürzten Jahreszahl 97. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Scheinbar unediert. Schürfkratzer auf der Vorderseite, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion H. D. Rauch 90, Wien 2012, Nr. 2191. Ein Doppelstück des letzten regulären Goldguldens des Rheinischen Münzvereins. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Wolfgang of Dalberg, 1582-1601, thick double goldgulden of 1597, Mainz mint. Obverse: quartered arms of Mainz and Dalberg over a crozier and sword, cardinal's hat above; reverse: arms of Mainz, three shields around (Trier, Cologne and Bavaria), two digit date below. Extremely rare, unpublished, abrasions on the obverse, extremely fine.)"
This rare type is not mentioned in the SCWC or Friedberg. It may be unique. It may actually be a double ducat (7 g), not a double goldgulden (6.5 g).
