Mainz (1354-56) goldgulden Fr-1598
This specimen was lot 2120 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$4,986 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF GERLACH VON NASSAU, 1354-1371. Die Münzstätte Eltville. Goldgulden o. J. (1354-1356), Eltville. Florentiner Typ. Mit Adler sowie Beizeichen Rad und Nassauer Löwe zu den Seiten des Heiligen. + GERL - ° AREPS Florentiner Lilie//• S • ION[retrograd]A - N[retrograd]N[retrograd]ES • B • Johannes der Täufer mit erhobener Rechten und Kreuzstab steht v. v. GOLD. R Attraktives Exemplar, sehr schön +. Exemplar der Auktion Frankfurter Münzhandlung 146, Frankfurt/Main 1996, Nr. 369 und der Slg. Eberhard Link, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 315, Osnabrück 2018, Nr. 8073. Dieses und das folgende Stück werden in päpstlichen Rechnungen als „floreni ad aquilam de Alemannia“ ausgewiesen. Der Adler als Beizeichen erscheint auch auf den Geprägen Ludwigs von Bayern und Karls IV. Sowie der Stadt Lübeck. Es dürfte daher wirklich die Bedeutung von „Reichsgeld“ gehabt haben; siehe auch GN 75, 1980, S. 5 ff. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Gerlach of Nassau, 1354-71, undated goldgulden, circa 1354-56, Eltville mint, Florentine type. Obverse: eagle and wheel and the lion of Nassau; reverse: St. John the Baptist stands, facing, with cross and raised right hand. Rare, attractive example, choice very fine. This and the following piece are shown in papal accounts as “floreni ad aquilam de Alemannia”. The eagle as a symbol also appears on the coins of Ludwig of Bavaria and Charles IV as well as the city of Lübeck. It may therefore really have had the meaning of “Reichsgeld”; see also GN 75, 1980, p. 5 ff.)"
This is the first gold coin mentioned for this ecclesiastical state, which was a major issuer of goldgulden in the late Middle Ages. Gerlach issued goldgulden in several types: Fr-1597 (lily obverse/St. John reverse), Fr-1598 (as -1597 but Eltville mint, shown here), Fr-1599 (archbishop standing/arms reverse) and Fr-1600 (archbishop standing/elector Ruprecht on reverse).
