Sincona sale 51, lot 3215

This specimen was lot 3215 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 425 CHF (about US$513 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Magdeburg, Stadt, 16 Gute Groschen 1672. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. Kleiner Kratzer. (Germany, city of Magdeburg, sixteen good groschen of 1672. Rare, Good very fine, Small scratch.)"

This sixteen gute groschen, struck 1672-73, matches the weight of the gulden (2/3 thaler) being isued in large numbers in north Germany at this time. However, this type is rare. Later, in the eighteenth century, this denomination declined in value to half a thaler. Magdeburg was annexed to Brandenburg in 1680 and the separate coinage ceased.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 18.53 g.

Catalog reference: KM 301, von Schrötter 1428, Dav-642.
