bishopric of Halberstadt in 1547. Magdeburg is to the northeast.

This specimen was lot 358 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,550 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Magdeburg, ERZBISTUM Joachim Friedrich von Brandenburg, 1566-1598. Reichstaler 1584, Halle. Min. Schrötlingsfehler, winz. Prägeschwäche, vorzüglich. (Germany, archbishopric of Magdeburg, Joachim Frederick of Brandenburg, 1566-98, thaler of 1584, Halle mint. Planchet flaws, cleaned, extremely fine. )"

Davenport lists this type of 1583-85 as scarce. By the second half of the sixteenth century, the archbishopric of Magdeburg was completely converted to Lutheranism yet the ecclesiastical state was not abolished. Instead, it became a puppet state of the elector of Brandenburg, who either appointed himself or one of his close relatives archbishop. Brandenburg annexed it outright in 1680.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-9441, v. Schr. 245 leicht var.
