Magdeburg 1579 thaler Dav-9438
This specimen was lot 357 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,584 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Magdeburg, ERZBISTUM Joachim Friedrich von Brandenburg, 1566-1598. Reichstaler 1579, Magdeburg. Von großer Seltenheit. Teilweise dunkle Patina, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Künker 33, Osnabrück 1996, Nr. 364. (Germany, archbishopric of Magdeburg, Joachim Frederick of Brandenburg, 1566-98, thaler of 1579, Magdeburg mint. Of the greatest rarity, blotchy toning, extremely fine. From Kunker sale 33, lot 364.)"
Davenport lists this one year type as rare and could not find a photo of it. By the second half of the sixteenth century, the archbishopric of Magdeburg was completely converted to Lutheranism yet the ecclesiastical state was not abolished. Instead, it became a puppet state of the elector of Brandenburg, who either appointed himself or one of his close relatives archbishop. Brandenburg annexed it outright in 1680.
