Madura Island (1811-54) ducaton KM-203.2
This specimen was lot 120 in Schulman auction 388 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,396 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Dukaton of zilveren rijder, Munten uit de Archipel - Dukaton of zilveren rijder 1758 (1811-54), Silver, MADURA, SOUMANEP Utrecht. Type IVb. Ruiter naar rechts boven gekroond provinciewapentje met stadsschild in het hart en titel .BELG: PRO: TRAI. Kz. generaliteitswapen, jaartal in cartouche onder het wapen, mt. stadsschild boven de kroon. Kabelrand. Met klop E55: weerhaken van Soumanep met afgerond einde. PCGS XF Details, Cleaned. (ducaton or silver rider of 1758, Utrecht mint, with Madura island counterstamp, type IVb. Obverse: mounted knight charges right, over the crowned provincial arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality, mintmark above, date below in a cartouche, reeded edge. With Sumanep countermark. The Dutch hold on the East Indies at this point was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna and was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia. This counterstamp, applied by a local despot on Madura Island off Java, is found on various Dutch, Austrian and Mexican silver coins circulating in the area.
