Madura Island (1811-54) ducaton KM-201.1
This specimen was lot 43282 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Madura Island - Mexico. Sultanate of Sumenep. Ducaton, ND (ca. 1811-54). Sultan Paku Nata Ningrat. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, VF Details; Countermark: EF Details. Countermark: Variety S1d; Flower-like design. Applied to the obverse of a 1736-MoMF Mexico pillar 8 Reales of Philip V (KM-103). This decently preserved example displays rich mottled patina with even wear and plenty remaining detail. The countermark is boldly applied and complete between the pillars on the obverse. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now slightly subdued by the rich patina. Despite its shortcomings a presentable example of this popular type. Ex: Jacky Young Collection. Ex: Alfonso Garcia Collection. Ex: Jesus Cacho Collection." The Dutch hold on the East Indies at this point was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna and was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia. This counterstamp, applied by a local despot on Madura Island off Java, is found on various Dutch, Austrian and Mexican silver coins circulating in the area.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: host coin 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver.
