Sincona sale 102, lot 5340

This specimen was lot 5340 in Sincona Auction 102 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 1,700 CHF (about US$2,562 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ. Luzern. Stadt und Kanton. Schilling 1618, Luzern. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Gutes sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Hess Divo 315, Zürich, Oktober 2009, Los 91. (Switzerland, canton of Luzern, schilling of 1618, Luzern mint. Rare in this condition, Good Very Fine.)"

This type was struck in numerous varieties 1611-22 and undated. St. Leodegar, depicted on the reverse, made an enemy of Ebroin, mayor of the palace of Neustria, and was blinded on his orders in AD 679. One thaler was 36 schilling or 72 kreuzer. This example realized ten times the catalog value.
