Künker sale 354, lot 5803

This specimen was lot 5803 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,959 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LÜNEBURG, STADT, Breiter Doppeltaler o. J. (um 1609). In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung AU 50 (3166016-009). RR Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, fast vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Luneburg, undated broad double thaler. Graded NGC AU-50. Very rare, minor planchet flaws, about extremely fine.)"

This very rare type was issued by the city, not the duke. The city issued thalers until the end of the Thirty Years War. Another double thaler issued a few years later featured St. John the Baptist joining the man in the moon on the obverse and the city arms on the reverse (Dav-LS342).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 15, Dav-LSA342; Schnee 24; Mader 711.
