Lubeck 1724-III dreiling
This specimen was lot 11249 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €129 (about US$149). The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Lübeck (Bishopric). Dreiling, 1724-III. Osnabrück Mint. Christian August. NGC MS-62. Attractive uncirculated example. From the L.E. Bruun Collection." This is the only issue of this denomination from this locale. It had a face value of 1/192 of a thaler or one quarter schilling. It was struck 1723-24 by the bishop, not the city, and has a fairly low catalog value.
The bishopric of Lübeck was established in the twelfth century. Like most of northern Germany, including the separate free city of Lübeck, it went over to Lutheranism in the mid-sixteenth century and all its bishops were Lutherans after 1586. Christian August of Holstein-Gottorp (born 1673, ruled 1706-26) was the Lutheran Administrator of the Prince-Bishopric of Lübeck. As a Lutheran, he was married and had ten children, eight of whom survived him. Mintmaster Jobst Jakob Janisch worked in Celle (1687-1705), Lüneburg (1687-1705) and Osnabrück (1720-1725).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.39 g, billon, 13 mm diameter, this specimen 0.46 g.
