Künker sale 335, lot 4000
city and bishopric of Lübeck in 1648

This specimen was lot 4000 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €4,800 (about US$6,281 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LÜBECK, BISTUM. Johann Adolf, Herzog von Holstein-Gottorp, 1586-1607. Taler 1608. Zwittertaler. RR Fast sehr schön. (Germany, bishopric of Lubeck, John Adolf, duke of Holstein-Gottorp, 1586-1607, thaler of 1608. Rare, about very fine.)"

The bishopric of Lubeck having completely converted to Lutheranism, there was no need to appoint a priest to the episcopal throne. The dukes of Schleswig-Holstein held the bishopric from 1589 until it was secularized in 1802. The coinage issued therefrom was completely separate from that of the Hanseatic city. This type was minted after Johann Adolf had abdicated in favor of Johann Friedrich in 1607.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28,76 g.
