Liege 1751 liard
This specimen was lot 74176 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "BELGIUM. Liege. Liard, 1751. Liege Mint. Johann Theodor. NGC MS-66 Red Brown. An exceptional survivor, this red-brown Gem stands with just two others at the top spot in the NGC census." This type was struck 1750-52 along with two and four liards. The bishopric of Liège was an enclave within and surrounded by the Austrian Netherlands and was invaded and annexed by revolutionary France in 1795. It is now part of Belgium. John Theodore was the last Bavarian to reign as prince-bishop of Liège altho he was never archbishop of Cologne as his predecessors were.
