Jean Elsen sale 156, lot 1226

This specimen was lot 1226 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €600 (about US$770 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LIEGE, Principauté, Jean Théodore de Bavière (1744-1763), Cu double liard, 1750, Liège. D/ Ecu échancré et couronné, sous un chapeau de cardinal. R/ Cinq écussons posés en croix. La date dans les angles. Très rare. Trace de corrosion au revers. presque Très Beau. Provient de la collection H. Frère, septembre 2000. (principality of Liège, John Theodore of Bavaria, 1744-63, copper double liard of 1750, Liège mint. Obverse: crowned arms under a cardinal's hat; reverse: five shields posed in a cross, the date in the angles. Very rare, light pitting on the reverse, about Very Fine.)"

John Theodore was the last Bavarian to reign as prince-bishop of Liège altho he was never archbishop of Cologne as his predecessors were. Three different liards were struck in 1750: KM 156 (shown here, with a cardinal's hat on the obverse); KM 157 (obverse legend, "I • THEOD • CAR • D • G : BAV • D") and KM 158 (obverse legend, "I • THEOD * CAR • D • G • BAU • D", struck 1750-52). The first is shown here and is rare compared to the other two.
