Jean Elsen sale 156, lot 1203

This specimen was lot 1203 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €320 (about US$411 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LIEGE, Principauté, Jean-Louis d'Elderen (1688-1694), AR patagon, 1691, Liège. Tranche cordonnée. D/ B. à d. R/ Ecu couronné. Traces d'ajustage au revers. Patine foncée. Beau à Très Beau. Provient de la collection A. Symkens, 25 novembre 1991. (principality of Liège, John Louis of Elderen, 1688-94, silver patagon of 1691, Liège mint, reeded edge. Obverse: bust right; reverse: crowned arms. Traces of adjustment marks on the reverse, nice patina, Fine to Very Fine.)"

The bishopric of Liège was an ecclesiastical state in central Belgium. The surrounding territory was ruled by the Spanish Hapsburgs from about 1500 until 1699 and the Austrian Hapsburgs 1714-97. This type was struck 1689-93 and is not rare.
