Jean Elsen sale 156, lot 1090

This specimen was lot 1090 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €60 (about US$77 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LIEGE, Principauté, Robert de Berghes (1557-1564), AR patard, 1561, Liège ou Hasselt. D/ Ecu de l'évêque sous la date. R/ Croix longue posée sur un quadrilobe. Très Beau. (principality of Liège, Robert de Berghes, 1557-64, silver patard of 1561, Liège or Hasselt mints. Obverse: arms of the bishop below the date; reverse: long cross in a quadrilobe. Very Fine.)"

The bishopric of Liège was an ecclesiastical state in central Belgium and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. The surrounding territory was ruled by the Spanish Hapsburgs from about 1500 until 1699 and the Austrian Hapsburgs 1714-97. The patard was equivalent to the Dutch stuiver.
