Leon (1157-88) dinero
This specimen was lot 521 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €600 (about US$835 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ESPAGNE, CASTILLE ET LEON, Ferdinand II (1157-1188), billon dinero. D/ FRNANDVS REX Croix posée sur un croissant, cantonnée de quatre points. R/ S - ALFOVN Personnage cour. brandissant une épée, un enfant à sa g. À g. de l'épée, un croissant. Rare. Très Beau. (kingdom of Leon, Ferdinand II, 1157-88, billon dinero. Obverse: a cross over a crescent, cantonned with four pellets; reverse: a crowned figure brandishing a sword, a child to the left, a crescent to the left of the sword. Rare, Very Fine.)"
Fernando's brother Sancho was king of Castile 1157-58. Cayón attributes this to Alfonso VIII (r. 1158-1214), king of Castile, nephew of Fernando.
