Leiden 1574 28 stuivers
The first specimen was lot 5232 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,047 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NIEDERLANDE, LEIDEN, Stadt. 28 Stüber 1574 (Juliemission), geprägt während der Belagerung durch spanische Truppen unter Francisco de Valdez. Stadtwappen in verzierter Kartusche//Löwe l. mit Lanze und Freiheitshut, zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl 15 - 74, oben Krone. R Sehr schönes Exemplar. Aus der Sammlung Eberhard Link. Exemplar der Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 360, Frankfurt/Main 1999, Nr. 1478. (Netherlands, city of Leiden, 28 stuivers of July 1574, struck while besieged by Spanish troops of Francisco de Valdez. Obverse: city arms in cartouche; reverse: lion holding lance and liberty cap divides the date, crown above. Scarce, very appealing example.)"
The second specimen was lot 1289 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,669 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"NEDERLAND, LEIDEN, belegerd door de Spanjaarden (21 augustus 1573 - 3 oktober 1574), AR 28 stuiver, emissie 10 juli 1574. Afslag op vierkant plaatje. Vz/ GODT BEHOEDE LEYDEN Versierd stadswapen binnen dubbel omschrift. Kz/ (kroon) HAEC LIBERTATIS ERGO Klimmende leeuw n. l. met speer waarop vrijheidshoed tussen jaartal. Zeldzaam. Twee rijen kleine klopjes langs de rand op vz. Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, city of Leiden, besieged by the Spanish (August 1573-October 1574), silver 28 stuivers, emission of July 1574, struck on a square planchet. Obverse: arms in double legend; reverse: lion rampant left with spear and hat divides the date. Rare, rim bumps on the obverse, very fine.)"
