This specimen was lot 1048 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "LEBANON: French Mandate, 1920-1945, AE 2 piastres, 1925(a). ESSAI, NGC graded MS65." We have avoided using essais or patterns in these pages, having plenty of regular issues to deal with. However, obtaining images of Lebanese coins seems unusually difficult, so we have posted an essai for this entry, especially since the production issue is itself very scarce, despite the large mintage. It was accompanied by a one and five piastres.
Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 (regular issue).
Specification: 2 g, aluminum-bronze.
Catalog reference: KM-E3 (essay), KM 4 (regular issue).
