This specimen was lot 71671 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "LAOS. 8000 Kip, 1971. Berlin Mint. Savang Vatthana. NGC PROOF-65 Ultra Cameo. An enticing and dazzling Gem, this radiant issue was struck for the coronation of the king, Savang Vatthana." This set, which included coins from a silver 1,000 kip to a gold 80,000 kip, was issued to honor king Savang Vathana, who was ousted in 1975 when the communists took over. The mintage estimate was probably the amount authorized, not the amount sold.
