Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, part of lot 20408
SB121-20408f.jpg

This specimen was part of lot 20408 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), which sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "LAOS. Vatthana Coronation Silver Set (4 Pieces), 1971. All NGC Certified. 1) 10000 Kip. NGC MS-65. 2) 5000 Kip. NGC MS-66. 3) 2500 Kip. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. 4) 1000 Kip. NGC MS-69. This entrancing and fairly SCARCE set includes the original case of issue and presents great eye appeal. Rather strangely, the 2500 Kip piece is clearly a proof, while the other three appear to have been struck with proof dies, but on planchets that appear matte overall." This set was issued to honor king Savang Vathana, who was ousted in 1975 when the communists took over. The mintage estimate was probably the amount authorized, not the amount sold. Gold coins (4,000, 8,000, 20,000, 40,000 kip) were also struck and sold.

Recorded mintage: est. 20,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 20 g, 0.925 fine silver, 0.594 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-8.
