Stephen Album sale 47, lot 925
Kashmir in 1942

This specimen was lot 925 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "LADAKH: AR ja'u, VS1928 (1871), Tibetan script jam-bu'i par and date // Persian script zarb ladakh qilimrao jamun sanah and date, well struck on a full flan, a superb example! PCGS graded AU55." Ladakh is the central and eastern portion of Kashmir. As an independent kingdom it was under the strong influence of Tibet but was incorporated into the Raj by the British. When the British left in 1948, India and Pakistan clashed over Kashmir but the Ladakh portion remains under Indian control. Based on the weight, we surmise that this coin was between one-sixth and one-fifth of a rupee.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 2.07 g.

Catalog reference: KM-8.
